There has been serious political tension, scholarly
debate, and religious controversy concerning the
Dome of the Rock ever since its construction in the 7th
century AD. Some claim it is built on the Holy of Holies
of Solomon’s Temple; others believe that it marks the
spot where the young Jesus preached to the Elders;
and still others regard it as the spot from which
Mohammed ascended to Heaven. Whatever the
belief, Jews, Christians and Moslems hold the Rock
over which the Dome of the Rock is built to be in some
fashion holy. This lecture traces the history of the
Rock and the Dome of the Rock from the second
millennium BC to present times.
