TUSCANY
Tuscany has been burdened by generations of
travelers’ tiresome observations and volumes of the
precious opinions of art historians. Indeed! The
modern tourist and student probably spend more time
reflecting upon other travelers’ observations and
absorbing other scholars’ opinions regarding the
Tuscans than they do in examining the Tuscans for
themselves. So, let’s set aside our Vasaris, Ruskins,
Burckhardts, and Baedekers and take a look at the
Tuscans over the ages as they saw and described
themselves. Our guides will be their civic buildings,
their crafts and artifacts, their financial records,
journals, churches, war songs and tombs.
