VATICAN CITY
It is not the smallest sovereign state in the world (that
honor belongs to the Sovereign Order of the Knights of
St. John of Jerusalem), but its ruler commands a
worldwide allegiance that would be the envy of any king,
president or prime minister. Though elected by mortals,
and a mortal and sinner himself, the Pope claims a
special divine guidance in certain matters. How is such
a man chosen? What are the “secret” workings of the
election conclave? What exactly are the Pope’s
religious and temporal powers and responsibilities in
this day and age? This course will examine the
workings of the Papacy, from a Pope’s election, to the
discharge of his responsibilities, and finally to his
burial. The course will also look at Vatican City’s most
famous house of worship and the incredible collections
built up by the Popes over the centuries.
