TWO LECTURES
1. Augustus: The Rise to Power
With the assassination of Julius Caesar battle lines were drawn between the followers of Caesar and the partisans of the Republic. No one even noted the existence of Caesar’s adopted son Gaius Octavius Thurinus, one day to be known as Augustus. But within 12 years Augustus had defeated every rival and ally to become undisputed master of the Roman Res Publica.

2. Augustus: The City of Marble
Suetonius wrote that Augustus found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble. Augustus claimed to have restored 82 temples in the city. He and his associates left behind a wealth of aqueducts, arenas, theaters, temples, plazas, statues and altars. The ruins of many of these can still be seen in Rome, including the Ara Pacis and Prima Porta Augustus.
